Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. While there is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships, there can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.
One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections, offer encouragement, and provide the kind of peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one. Their willingness to reach out, share their experiences, and invite others into community life helps turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.
As Resident Services Director at Vitalia Highland Heights, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make in helping new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.
A successful move-in experience begins with a smooth transition, friendly neighbors, and someone nearby to answer questions. At Vitalia Highland Heights, the goal is to help each new resident feel supported as they adjust to a new home, new routines, and new faces.
That support matters because moving into a senior living community can feel like a big change. Even when a resident feels excited, the first few days may still bring uncertainty. Having an outgoing, friendly, and fun Resident Ambassador nearby can help make the experience feel lighter and more welcoming.
Resident Ambassadors help new residents become familiar with daily life in the community. One simple but helpful way they do this is by showing new residents the Arrow App. This gives residents another way to stay connected, learn what is happening, and begin feeling more confident in their new surroundings.
Some of the most meaningful welcomes happen in everyday moments. One example involved an ambassador sitting with a new resident during their first meal after family had left. Instead of feeling alone in the dining room, the new resident had someone beside them.
That ambassador also introduced the resident to “the gang,” helping turn an unfamiliar room into a more comfortable place. A friendly seat at the table can make a lasting difference during a moment that might otherwise feel uneasy.

Residents often respond quickly to other residents because they see them as peers. They may feel like they are in the same boat, rather than talking to the people who make the rules. That shared perspective can make it easier to ask questions, accept invitations, and begin building friendships.
Resident Ambassadors also help shape the culture of Vitalia Highland Heights by sharing honest feedback about what is working and what may not be going over as well. Their perspective helps the team better understand community life from the resident point of view. Through their friendliness, insight, and willingness to help, they offer a level of comfort during what can feel like an uneasy situation.
Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents—they help build the culture of our community. Through simple acts of kindness, genuine friendships, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.
The move-in process may only last a few days, but the relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
