Every great meal starts with someone who cares.
Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.
In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.
We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

As Culinary Director at Vitalia Highland Heights, I began working in senior living in 2018 and have always enjoyed it. Senior living culinary offers the chance to serve residents in a way that feels personal. It brings connection, purpose, and meaningful daily moments.
Residents have taught me to live life to the fullest. Life can change at any moment, and it is easy to get caught up in being busy. Their stories remind me to slow down and enjoy the little things.
Those reminders are part of what makes this work meaningful. A meal, a conversation, or a shared laugh can brighten the day. Small moments often become the ones that stay with us.
One favorite special event is Family Fun Day. It brings residents, families, and team members together. Events like this create joy and help the community feel even more connected.
Success in culinary in senior living takes openness and a willingness to listen. Residents often have ideas, suggestions, and recipes to share. Being open to those ideas helps make dining feel more personal.
Listening also builds trust. When residents know their voices matter, they feel more connected to the dining experience. Their feedback can inspire new recipes, better meals, and meaningful conversations.
There is not just one moment that shows this work makes a difference. There are many. Some days, the impact is felt after fun conversations with residents. Other days, it is in the good moments that stay with you after leaving work.
Those daily connections matter. They show that senior living culinary is about more than preparing food. It is about building relationships, sharing joy, and helping residents feel valued every day.
Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.
Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.
To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.
Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
