September is “National Good Neighbor Month,” and in the spirit of this special time, we would like to take the opportunity to share about a unique part of our senior living community – our Memory Care Neighborhood.
Here at VITALIA Active Adult Community® – North Olmsted we strive to make our Neighborhood a special place, not just for our residents, but for everyone who comes to visit and join in our daily festivities. We celebrate being good neighbors every day.
We call out communities Neighborhoods because that is exactly what they are. The individuals who live next door are not mere strangers or other residents, they are friends with welcoming faces that we see and engage with every day. Calling our community a Neighborhood helps create that feeling of home and helps to build bonds within.
Here at North Olmsted, we strive to create a welcoming and bright place to call home. Our residents feel this warmth and actively acknowledge that this is their community, something they are truly part of. We see our residents engage the same way you would engage an old friend. They encourage each other to come to events and to have fun. We work to have an active relationship with the independent and assisted living communities. It’s exciting to have friends come visit or to say “Hello.”
We love the connections our residents have with their families and always keep an open communication with them. They love to see their loved ones thriving and making new friendships. We also like to help them to find ways so they can engage and still have those meaningful interactions with their loved ones.
September is also Alzheimer’s month. There are many ways you can support people who are living with dementia. Open not only your heart, but also your ears to someone living with dementia or Alzheimer’s. It can often be hard to fully understand what someone living with dementia may be trying to tell you, but if you really listen to what they are trying to communicate, you could find yourself in a beautiful and enriching conversation.
We encourage everyone to be a “good neighbor” and find ways to engage and make a difference in the lives of individuals living with dementia. You don’t need to have a special talent, just a heart for others around you. If you would like more information about volunteering in a Memory Care Neighborhood near you or if you are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia, we would love to help!
