Family involvement in Memory Care is incredibly valuable and, at times, understandably complex. As dementia progresses for a loved one, families often face new emotions, uncertainty, and questions about how to stay connected in meaningful ways. At the same time, Memory Care teams can guide families toward involvement that enhances quality of life for both the resident and the family. As Memory Care Director of Vitalia Highland Heights, I have seen how purposeful family involvement can go beyond traditional visits. With the right support, families can remain active participants in their loved one’s journey.
I engage families in meaningful events by first learning about their availability and preferences. Then, I coordinate opportunities that fit their schedules while also supporting the needs of the neighborhood. This approach helps create experiences that feel accessible, intentional, and valuable for both families and residents.

I support families who want to be involved but may feel unsure, overwhelmed, or hesitant by meeting with them one-on-one to better understand their concerns. From there, I offer individualized guidance and practical support. I also connect them with helpful resources, including podcasts and a monthly education class. These tools help build confidence and encourage ongoing involvement.
One example of family involvement positively impacting a loved one’s quality of life came when a family member visited to play the piano for residents. As residents gathered to listen and dance, one resident asked to join at the keyboard. That interaction created a joyful and meaningful moment. It brought residents together and encouraged engagement.
Family members interested in volunteering in the neighborhood can get started by reaching out by email, phone, or in person. From there, I can offer guidance and help identify meaningful ways to become involved.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to family engagement in Memory Care. With intention, empathy, and clear guidance, it can become one of the most impactful parts of a resident’s experience. When families feel supported, empowered, and invited into meaningful moments, the result is often deeper connection, improved well-being, and a stronger sense of community for everyone involved. Whether someone is a family member looking to stay involved or a care professional seeking new ideas, I hope these insights inspire thoughtful, compassionate engagement in every Memory Care neighborhood.
